Our new award for good practice in teaching for diversity and inclusion, is in memory of a much loved friend and colleague. The Brenda Eastwood award invites UKLA members to nominate schools, Early Years practitioners, teachers, HE tutors, consultants, librarians or publishers who have shown good practice in empowering children to respect and appreciate diversity in terms of:

Janet Douglas Gardner Senior Lecturer and Senior Fellow in the Higher Education Academy London Metropolitan University. Teaching and consultancy experience in Literacy in the UK, Guyana, The USA, India and the Bahamas - Early Years, Primary, HE.

Jane Bednall taught from Nursery to sixth form. Deputy Head in Hackney. In advisory work in Newham developed work with Primary Schools to facilitate planning for a more diverse and culturally inclusive curriculum #decolonisingthecurriculum. Trainingmaterials, ‘Developing a Culturally Inclusive Curriculum’ were recently republished at UKLA.org. Belief in children’s right to be represented in voice and image #reflecting realities

Dr. Liz Chamberlain is a Senior Lecturer in Education at The Open University. She is Academic Director for the Leave No Girl Behind project, Strengthening Adolescent Girls' Education (SAGE) in Zimbabwe and is co-Director of the OU's Children's Research Centre. James Berry visited her school in 1988 and she never forgot his magical way of telling stories.

Lynda Graham was a primary teacher and advisory teacher. Currently Convener of UKLA Awards, she is a founder member of the UKLA Book Awards team.

Lorraine Hunte, born in London of African Caribbean Heritage worked as a primary school teacher in a Croydon Primary School for 39 years. Currently works as a supply teacher, a union caseworker. Received the Blair Peach Award 2018 at the annual NUT Conference for Exemplary Contribution to Equality and Diversity, for work done involving anti-racism. A member of the NEU National Disciplinary Committee.

Roger McDonald has been a member of UKLA for many years and has enjoyed the support of the organisation throughout his teaching career. Working now at the University of Greenwich, Roger has an interest in the development of imaginative practices within the primary classroom to ensure that teaching has passion and purpose for the empowerment of the pupils. He was delighted to be asked to be part of the Brenda Eastwood Award panel to celebrate the fantastic work taking place to promote diversity and inclusion.

Shaheen Sparekh, a secondary school teacher and deputy SENCo who is passionate about providing equal opportunities for all people irrespective of background. She has taught in an inner-city school for over 12 years and in January 2019 was seconded to coordinate an ‘Opportunities Area’ based project based on Targeted Student Support across Derby City, with a view to reducing mid-year moves. Shaheen has experience training staff on attachment theory and has spoken at Ambition School Leadership conferences as well as written blogs as a fellow from the MA class of 2016.
Shaheen has been a teacher judge for the UKLA book award for two years and has enjoyed countless opportunities to get dressed for World Book day to promote a love of reading! Some of her selected characters have included: Elisabeth Bennet, Mr Twit and Medusa!

Ms Cheryl Diane Parkinson is an author and educator of 14 years, teaching English Literature and Language, GCSE and A Level at an all boys catholic school in London. Her publishing history includes articles for The National Union of Teacher's newsletter, The Voice Online as well as online magazines. Currently she is in the final year of a PhD in Creative Writing at Birmingham University, part of the Russell Group.

My name is Arun Sharma and I am a secondary school teacher working in Bristol, teaching English, Latin and Drama. I try to keep busy promoting reading, poetry slams, literacy and a wholesome love of books, outside of the classroom also. I have been a UKLA book awards teacher judge and have now had the privilege of serving on the book awards panel. I am further privileged to have been asked to join the Brenda Eastwood Award panel for 2019.
