Conference Theme: Interrogating the Technologies of Language and Literacy Education: Making Meaning Through, Despite, and Beyond the Digital
To celebrate the UK Literacy Association’s (UKLA) 62nd International Conference, we invite you to interrogate the ever-evolving technologies for making meaning that we use in language and literacy education, as well as those used by children, young people, their families and communities. This year we ask, how are critical-creative-affective literacies crafted through, despite, and beyond the digital?
Our theme comes at time of increasing division in the world, oftentimes driven by online and offline misinformation, algorithm-directed feeds, and siloed online communities. At the same time, the increasing integration of Gen AI sometimes blurs the lines between virtual and material, digital and real. Instead, we hope to explore how language and literacy researchers, educators, and other stakeholders are navigating these complex technologies (digital and/or analogue) with children, young people, and adult learners alike to think critically, engage in play, take action in their world, and build a keener understanding of emotions.
Submitters for any of the presentation types might consider using any of the following questions to help guide their submissions, or interpret the theme in their own way:
- How are digital technologies being leveraged for more humanised language and literacy pedagogies?
- How are analogue technologies being (re)considered, (re)imagined, and (re)assembled for more holistic language and literacy learning?
- What are the emerging practices, resources, environments, relations, and dispositions for doing a 21st Century language and literacy education?
