Each year students who sign up to shadow the UKLA Book Awards take part in their own vote for the Winners of the UKLA Book Award. The winning authors of the student votes were honoured at the prestigious UKLA Book Awards Ceremony, part of the UKLA International Conference.

The Winners of the 2016 Student Vote for the UKLA Book Awards are:

3 to 6 - This Book Just Ate My Dog! Richard Byrne (author/illustrator), Oxford University Press

7 to 11 - The Imaginary A.F Harrold (author) and Emily Gravett (illustrator), Bloomsbury

12 to 16+ - The Ghosts of Heaven Marcus Sedgwick, Orion Indigo

Awards were announced at the UKLA International Conference 2016 by:

3 to 6 - Laura McEvilly & Mathew Taylor, CCCU:
"Attending the UKLA Conference as a student was inspiring and thought-provoking. Having the opportunity to not only shadow the book awards this year, but to meet many of the authors responsible for such high quality literature, such as Rebecca Cobb and Alexis Deacon, was an incredible and exciting experience. It was amazing to be able to talk to these authors about their work and also to see the impact that their books had had on primary school children in the awards presentation. It was an absolute honour to be able to announce the student shadow award and to be part of something so prestigious in the world of children’s literature"

7 to 11 - Hannah Laurence, Cambridge:
"It was wonderful to be part of the UKLA book awards in 2016 as a student shadower. UKLA research by Teresa Cremin has shown how important it is for teachers to have a good knowledge of Children's Literature. So this was a fantastic way to find out about high quality new texts and how to use them in the classroom.
Presenting the award to A.F. Harrold for "The Imaginary" was such an honour. It was also inspiring to meet the authors, editors and publishers who created the books that I will share with children in the classroom. Looking ahead to next year I am hoping to enter the "Our Class Loves This Book" project, because the work from Bristol and all over the UK was so creative! Thank you UKLA."

12 to 16+ - Nikki Derewicz, UWE:
"To see so many teachers and authors collectively socialise together, with discussion of teaching and reading for pleasure was inspiring for a trainee teacher like me. Every individual that was there was friendly and had a pure passion for what they did, whether it be teaching, writing, or leading a teaching union. The reassuring smiles and nods from both the authors and teachers gave me the confidence and pleasure to announce the winner."

Congratulations to the winning authors and illustrators
