Winners of the 2019 UKLA Sponsored Conference Places Announced
Each year HE tutors and student teachers from across the country come together to take part in shadowing the prestigious UKLA Book Awards, the only national book awards to be judged entirely by teachers.
As well as the opportunity to take part in a discussion group sharing some of this year’s richest and most compelling books for children and young people, participating tutors are able to nominate up to two students from each group for a sponsored place at the UKLA International Conference 2019 in Sheffield. The winners receive places at the conference and overnight accommodation sponsored by the NEU. As well as attending the UKLA conference, the winning students and their tutors are invited to attend the UKLA Book Awards ceremony on Friday July 12.
The 2019 judging panel, consisting of Lynda Graham (chair), Ruth Baker-Leask, James Clements, Phil Ferguson, Marion Hampton, Joanna Hasler, and Sue McGonigle, were hugely impressed with the quality of the 2019 entries. After much deliberation, the panel selected four winners. They are:
Sophie Brown, University of East Anglia, nominated by Sarah Brownsword
Barbara Guerriero, University of Manchester, nominated by Rebecca Simpson-Hargreaves
Christina Simpson, Roehampton University, nominated by Anna Harrison
Rebecca Talmy, University of Cambridge, nominated by Elizabeth Rawlinson-Mills
Each of the nominated students showed great commitment and accomplishments in three key areas:
- Engagement in the shadowing process beyond book group discussion (both on and off-line)
- Innovative or effective practice using the books with children/in the classroom
- Involvement in wider school/community initiatives involving reading/the books from shadowing
Chair of the judging panel, Lynda Graham said:
‘It was a joy to read about ways in which student teachers had shared their evident love of reading by introducing and working creatively with books shortlisted for the UKLA Book Awards in their classrooms’.
