Jeannie Bulman who studied at The University of Sheffield is this year’s winner for her doctoral study entitled ‘Developing a Progression Framework for Children’s Reading of Film’.
The prize was presented at the UKLA International Conference 2016, Mercure Holland House Hotel, Bristol. The novelty, depth and analysis of Jeannie’s research demonstrated the passion Jeannie has for literacy education.
Jeannie’s study draws on an analysis of nine children’s reading of film over a period of three years. It used a range of methods including observation, semi-structured interviews and analysis of children’s responses to tasks such as storyboarding. Children’s responses to film were tracked throughout the study. From this, Jeannie developed a spiral progression framework for teachers to use to track progress and inform next steps in learning.
Her findings demonstrate the importance of including of film as a text in its own right within the literacy curriculum, and will be a useful tool for teachers.
