Monday September 8th is International Literacy Day, proclaimed by UNESCO in 1965.  It’s a day that reminds us that no matter where we live, literacy plays a critical role in our lives.  It highlights the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.There are estimated to be 775 million adults in the world without even the most basic literacy skills. One in five are illiterate, of which two-thirds are women. It is also estimated that 60.7 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out.On International Literacy Day, throughout the world,  from students in Mexico to academics in Mongolia,  people will be participating in a wide variety of activities and events.Mark this day is by making a donation to UKLA’s Project Connect programmeProject Connect supplies books in local languages for children to read for pleasure.
