Navan Govender – West Scotland

Regional Rep

  • Regional Rep

I am a lecturer in Applied English Language & Literacy Education at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Currently, I co-lead the secondary English component of the Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). At UKLA I am a member of the Publicity & Communications Committee as well as the Critical Literacy SIG. My teaching and research interests involve exploring how language, literacy, and power work in and through English education by focusing on critical literacies, multimodality, and identity. I also have a particular interest in gender and sexual diversity, as well as its intersections with other identity categories. I have written several journal articles, book chapters, and blog posts, as well as produced several podcasts and webinars on the role of critical literacy as a social justice approach to language, literacy, and literature education in Scotland and the UK more broadly. I am hoping my role as a regional representative can contribute toward engaging teachers, teacher educators, schools, higher education, and young people in more critical and culturally sustainable work.
