No secret: using good models to write narrative in Year 2

In this article, Rebecca Kennedy describes how a year 2 teacher has planned and taught a sequence of literacy lessons for young writers, with cross curricular links to geography and art. 

The work is based on a story book about drought in an African Village: Lila and the Secret of Rain by David Conway, illustrated by Jude Daly (2009), and allows rich consideration of living and being in a different climate and culture. In the sequence, the teacher uses the REDM model (Bearne, Kennedy and Reedy, 2016) to develop contextualised teaching about grammatical choices and experimentation to help the children develop their abilities to make informed and effective language choices in their narrative writing.
