Film Education, Literacy and Learning

by Becky Parry & Jeannie Hill Bulman

This Minibook provides a much needed, but thus far absent, guide to developing and sustaining film education within the Primary English curriculum and classroom. For many children, film (and television drama) is a key early experience of narrative. As a consequence, children’s understandings of narrative, based on the moving image, must be valued in the classroom. However, we believe that simply valuing children’s existing media cultures is not adequate and that whilst it might increase motivation, this approach only scratches the surface of the potential of film education to support children’s literacy. We demonstrate the impact of rich and integrated approaches to film education which enhance children’s ability to understand and create narratives. Drawing on many examples from practice and research, we present a highly practical guide to film education which suggests new approaches to learning progression and is written specifically for those working with primary aged children.
Reader review
As someone inexperienced in the teaching of film in primary school, this minibook challenged my thinking and developed my confidence and understanding. It reshaped my perspective of film to view it as an enormously valuable and important form of text. This publication challenges myths, providing clear answers to any possible questions about engaging with film in primary school. It presents film as a key approach to literacy in the 21st Century and guides teachers to understand why and how we must teach children to ‘read’ and ‘write’ in this medium. It helps teachers to develop a clear rationale for choosing particular films, develop children’s analysis skills and their holistic thinking about films. Excellent ideas are offered to teach children to analyse, make and screen films. Steps of progression are outlined to empower teachers to assess progress and inform next steps of learning. This book is full of reasons and tools to take seriously and successfully implement the teaching of film in primary school. Karen Tulloch: Senior Lecturer, Primary English, IoE, St Mary’s University
