Teaching Grammar in Context is a professional development programme designed for school leaders, senior managers, literacy subject leaders or advisers as they help teachers work collaboratively with colleagues within the school, in local clusters of schools or across the authority in order to improve reading and writing through explicit grammar teaching. The materials are also designed to answer the demands of the writing element of the national curriculum for English and to support teachers as they prepare pupils for the spelling, punctuation and grammar test. They will also support the development of whole school policy about teaching grammar in context. The materials are based on the book Teaching Grammar Effectively in Primary Schools which outlines some of the key issues involved in teaching and learning about how language works and offers suggestions for teachers to develop their own classroom practice in teaching grammar and punctuation through their regular reading and writing provision. This professional development programme can be used with a group of teachers in one school or a group drawn from a cluster of schools.
