The events of this summer have proven that it has never been more important for empathy to be built into education; literacy is a key tool in enabling this. Therefore, UKLA have collaborated with EmpathyLab to create a toolkit of resources to support teachers and schools as they discuss the events that took place over the holidays and the anti-racist response. Through these discussions being grounded in the idea of empathy, they become vehicles for empowering students and encouraging them to accept and admire their differences. The resources below include talking points and reading suggestions that can act as launch pads to wider discussions of understanding differences and appreciating them. We believe that all students have the right to be taught how to express themselves and relate to each other and building empathy into literacy teaching is essential to this.
